Numerical Study of a Descending Sphere in a Low Reynolds Number Strongly Stratified Fluid

چکیده
The flow generated by a sphere descending uniformly in a linearly stratified diffusive fluid is investigated numerically for different Reynolds (Re) and Froude (F ) numbers. The parameters used for the simulations were 10 ≤ Re ≤ 10 and 10 ≤ F ≤ 10, keeping the Schmidt number, Sc (= 700, typical of sea water) fixed. The results demonstrate drag dependence on viscosity and stratification, suggesting that changes in these parameters would be intimately related to the phenomena of zooplankton vertical movement in the ocean.

Three Dimensional Analysis of Flow Past a Solid-Sphere at Low Reynolds Numbers with the Aid of Body Fitted Coordinates
In this paper, the flow-field of an incompressible viscous flow past a solid-sphere at low Reynolds numbers (up to 270) is investigated numerically. In order to extend the capabilities of the finite volume method, the boundary (body) fitted coordinates (BFC) method is used. Transformation of the partial differential equations to algebraic relations is based on the finite-volume method with coll...

متن کاملA Numerical Study of Drop Motion in Poiseuille Flow
The cross-stream migration of a deformable drop in two-dimensional Poiseuille flow at finite Reynolds numbers is studied numerically. In the limit of a small Reynolds number (<1), the motion of the drop depends strongly on the ratio of the viscosity of the drop fluid to the viscosity of the suspending fluid. For a viscosity ratio 0.125, the drop moves toward the centre of the channe while for t...

متن کاملExperiments and simulations of low Re sphere wakes with and without stratification
Near wakes behind a sphere in both homogeneous and linearly stratified background were studied numerically and experimentally at Reynolds number Re ≤ 1000, Froude number Fr ≥ 0.5. In a homogeneous fluid, the structural transitions with increasing Re are consistent with previous studies. The stratified results from simulations and experiments are in good agreement. Stratified wakes undergo simil...
